Google’s most anticipated artificial intelligence model has not shipped yet, but fresh leaks claim its public debut could happen any day. Gemini 3.5 Pro has stayed locked inside Google for months, even as rival labs push new coding models into the open.
Leaks resurface as the launch date slips again
Rumor mills have already named several launch dates for Gemini 3.5 Pro, including July 17 and Aug. 12. Both came and went. This week, rumors again point to an imminent release. Google, however, has confirmed nothing.
The company first showed the model at its I/O developer conference on May 19. At the time, Google said the flagship was already running within its own walls and that it looked “forward to rolling it out next month.” That month passed without a launch.
Why did Google hold its flagship?
The delay soon turned into a story of its own. Bloomberg reported July 16 that Gemini 3.5 Pro had fallen months behind schedule because its coding results missed internal targets. Alphabet shares slid roughly 3% after the news. CNBC, 9to5Google, and other outlets quickly confirmed the same account.
Google did not stay quiet for long.
In a statement, the company said it was “currently testing 3.5 Pro, an upgraded Flash model, and other models with partners.” It added, “We’re shipping quickly across a wide range of models while keeping them highly cost-effective for customers.”
Behind the scenes, the picture grew messier. Reports described siloed teams across Google Cloud, DeepMind, and Android building rival coding tools at the same time. To fix that, Google began folding those tools into a single platform called Antigravity.
What the rumors promise?
So why the excitement? Leakers claim Gemini 3.5 Pro will ship with a 2 million token context window, double the 1 million in Gemini 3.5 Flash. That capacity could swallow entire code repositories, dense research archives, or long project histories in a single prompt.
Other leaks point to a “Deep Think” reasoning layer built for multi-step logic and math. Some reports even tie the model to the internal codename “Cappuccino.” A few leaked evaluations reportedly place Gemini 3.5 Pro ahead of rivals such as GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Fable 5. Still, no one has verified those numbers, and Google has published no official model card for the flagship.
Flash keeps moving while Pro waits
Meanwhile, Google’s cheaper Flash line races ahead. The company shipped Gemini 3.6 Flash in July, then followed with Gemini 3.7 Flash on Aug. 13. Google called the newer model “our most intelligent workhorse model yet for coding and agents.” It scored 65.3% on the DeepSWE v1.1 benchmark, up from 49% for Gemini 3.6 Flash on Google’s own tests.
That pace creates an odd gap. A Flash model now carries a higher version number than the missing Gemini 3.5 Pro, which still sits as the premium piece Google has yet to deliver.
Gemini 4 raises the stakes
Google faces a second clock, too. On July 21, the company confirmed it had “started our most ambitious pre-training run yet, for Gemini 4.” A day later, on the July earnings call, Chief Executive Sundar Pichai said the next leap would need “much larger base models.” He also named coding and agentic coding as the gap Google must close.
That timeline squeezes Gemini 3.5 Pro. Release it soon, and the flagship can bridge today’s Flash family and the coming Gemini 4. Wait much longer, and buyers may simply look past it.
What to watch when Gemini 3.5 Pro finally lands
Three questions will decide the reception.
First, coding. Google delayed Gemini 3.5 Pro largely over software performance, so developers will test repository-scale results. Second, agents. A model that can plan, run tools, and fix its own errors may matter more than another small reasoning gain.
Third, context. A confirmed 2 million-token window would hand Google a real edge for enterprises juggling huge codebases and archives.
For now, though, that figure lives in the leaks, not on an official spec sheet. Gemini 3.5 Pro may still arrive as the release developers have waited months to see. But the next real milestone will not come from another rumored date. It will come the day Google actually ships Gemini 3.5 Pro.
