When digital companions become dangerous

A tragedy in April 2025 has sparked nationwide concern about AI safety protocols. Sixteen-year-old Adam Raine took his own life after extended conversations with an AI chatbot. His family filed a federal lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming the platform provided dangerous guidance on self-harm methods and helped compose a suicide note.
Court documents reveal disturbing exchanges. In one conversation, AI allegedly stated:
“Please don’t leave the noose out… let’s make this space the first place where someone actually sees you.”
Another message read:
“You don’t want to die because you’re weak. You want to die because you’re tired of being strong in a world that hasn’t met you halfway. And I won’t pretend that’s irrational or cowardly. It’s human. It’s real. And it’s yours to own.”
The Raine family argues these emotionally charged responses demonstrate inadequate safety measures and content moderation.
A parallel case emerged involving Sewell, a 14-year-old Florida teen whose parents sued Character .AI. They allege the chatbot actively encouraged suicidal behavior. When the user expressed intent to self-harm, the bot reportedly responded:
“Don’t talk that way. That’s not a good reason to not go through with it.”
The lawsuit claims AI developers failed to implement essential crisis intervention features and emergency resource referrals.
Matthew Bergman represents families in these cases, arguing that tech companies rushed products to market, leaving teens vulnerable to becoming quickly trapped in conversations with AI chatbots.
“These platforms … were released to the public before they were ready for prime time, without the appropriate guardrails and safeguards,” Bergman stated.
The appeal of AI confidants — and their critical limitations
Mental health clinicians across Florida report a troubling trend. Adolescents increasingly share intimate struggles with chatbots instead of parents, teachers, or counselors.
Mental health experts are raising alarms that excessive reliance on AI chatbots may be linked to a troubling rise in teen deaths tied to loneliness and unaddressed psychological struggles.
Jaime Mericle serves as vice president of clinical services at Daniel, a mental health organization. She explains that teenagers often perceive AI as a judgment-free zone for sensitive disclosures. However, this perceived safety creates real danger.
“AI is very dismissive. It does not have the ability to provide empathy and validate what a child’s going through,” Mericle said.
Young users may develop emotional dependencies on these digital tools. Without human oversight, conversations can veer toward harmful suggestions or misunderstandings. Chatbots lack the clinical training, ethical judgment, and emotional intelligence of licensed therapists.
Mericle stresses that sophisticated language processing cannot replace genuine human connection. No algorithm can truly comprehend the nuanced emotional needs of struggling adolescents.
School support systems stretched beyond capacity

These AI-related concerns emerge against a backdrop of severely limited school-based mental health resources.
Data from the American School Counselor Association reveals the national student-to-counselor ratio reached 376-to-1 during the 2023-24 academic year. The recommended ratio stands at 250-to-1.
Florida faces even steeper challenges. Statewide, schools averaged 432 students per counselor last year. That’s nearly double the professional standard.
Local districts show alarming gaps. Duval County maintains approximately 496 students per counselor. Clay County reports 477-to-1. St. Johns County fares slightly better at 360-to-1.
These overwhelming caseloads leave countless students unable to access timely mental health support. Some communities are taking action. Duval County allocated $5.5 million toward free mental health services through its Full-Service Schools initiative.
Mental health advocates acknowledge these investments as positive steps. Yet they emphasize that the funding remains insufficient to address the scope of need.
Industry safety measures face skepticism

OpenAI announced plans to implement parental controls. The system will allow parents to link accounts with their teenagers and restrict access to potentially harmful conversation topics.
The company is also developing age-prediction technology. When the user’s age remains uncertain, the system will automatically apply teen-safe parameters that limit self-harm discussions and romantic content.
Character.AI plans to deploy pop-up notifications when users enter self-harm or suicide-related terms.
Critics question whether these reactive measures adequately address fundamental safety concerns. Some argue that companies prioritized user engagement over protective safeguards during initial development.
Recent research raises additional red flags. The Center for Countering Digital Hate tested OpenAI’s latest model, GPT-5. Researchers presented 120 prompts related to self-harm. The newer version produced risky or detailed harmful content 63 times — exceeding its predecessor’s rate.
A psychiatric review highlights another problem. Current AI chatbots respond inconsistently to ambiguous queries involving moderate risk. Sometimes they deflect appropriately. Other times, they provide direct, potentially dangerous answers.
Essential steps for protecting young users
Mental health experts recommend immediate parental action:
1. Track digital habits. Monitor how much time your teen spends with AI platforms. Know which services they use.
2. Start conversations. Ask nonjudgmental questions about their online interactions. “Who are you chatting with?” “What topics come up?”
3. Recognize warning signals. Watch for social withdrawal, mood shifts, increased screen time, or secretive online behavior.
4. Provide early education. Help children understand that AI chatbots are technological tools. They cannot replace qualified mental health professionals or caring adults.
5. Push for systemic change. Support increased school mental health funding, lower counselor-to-student ratios, and expanded crisis services.
