Google’s AI surge reshapes the tech power order.

Google’s AI comeback rewrites the race in 2025

Posted on December 24, 2025

Google began 2025 facing serious questions about its position in artificial intelligence. Investors watched the company struggle while competitors captured headlines and market attention. Twelve months later, that story has completely changed. Google didn’t simply recover ground. It established dominance. Google’s AI comeback puts it back on top.

The turnaround has been remarkable. Despite a 36% stock gain in 2024, Wall Street still considered Google behind OpenAI in the AI race. That assessment no longer applies. Google now commands the center of artificial intelligence discussions, putting rivals on the defensive.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently announced a “code red” emergency as his organization works to match Google’s newest Gemini 3 platform. The situation carries notable irony. Google issued its own crisis alert in late 2022 following ChatGPT’s explosive launch. Three years forward, positions have switched.

Platform growth data reveals significant changes. Google has consistently closed the distance with OpenAI in monthly active users, a critical indicator of market relevance. Analyst research demonstrates that Gemini adoption is accelerating beyond ChatGPT’s pace during equivalent growth periods.

Hardware developments have also favored Google. In October, Anthropic, the organization developing Claude, announced plans to expand its use of Google’s custom processors. The strategy includes deploying up to one million chips supporting its software operations. Simultaneously, Google initiated discussions to provide comparable hardware to Meta, which operates Facebook and Instagram, according to The Information.

These achievements concluded a year of consistent execution. By December, investors were actively backing Google’s sustained momentum.

Analyst confidence reaches new heights

“Google will be the best performing Mag 7 stock in CY26,” Deepwater Asset Management managing partner Gene Munster stated in a Dec. 11 investor note.

“Google is in the strongest position when it comes to a fully integrated AI stack,” he continued. “Gemini is a leading model, its user base is expanding faster than OpenAI’s, Search is integrating AI effectively with ads reportedly on the way, and [Google Cloud Platform] continues to hold its ground in the infrastructure buildout cycle.”

Cloud platform drives financial performance

US AI education gets $1B boost from Google.

Much of this advancement flows through Google Cloud Platform, where AI revenue gets recorded. During the third quarter, Google reported cloud revenue jumping 34% year over year to $15.1 billion. Growth in the preceding quarter measured 32%.

New customer acquisition followed similar trends, climbing 34% annually.

“Our complete enterprise AI product portfolio is accelerating growth in revenue, operating margins, and backlog,” CEO Sundar Pichai informed analysts during the company’s earnings presentation.

Pichai revealed Google secured more than $1 billion in major deals during the quarter, exceeding the combined total from the previous two years. More than 70% of current cloud customers now utilize Google’s AI services, he noted.

Search integration proves successful

Search became a critical testing ground. Google deployed its conversational AI Mode to all U.S. users in May, combining it with AI Overviews that now feature advertising. The initiative demonstrated confidence that emerging technology could strengthen rather than diminish its core operation.

Consumer products followed quickly. Google’s Nano Banana image application went viral in August, attracting users who had never interacted with its AI tools previously. Then Gemini 3 arrived.

Gemini 3 shifts the competitive landscape

Unveiled in November, Gemini 3 immediately earned recognition from industry executives. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff publicly announced he was abandoning ChatGPT after evaluating Google’s platform. Performance assessments soon emerged, with Gemini 3 surpassing GPT-5.1 across numerous evaluation categories.

Usage statistics confirmed the enthusiasm. TD Cowen analyst John Blackledge referenced a survey of approximately 2,500 U.S. consumers showing Gemini’s monthly penetration rising from 24% in July to 26% in October. Google’s AI Mode also increased. ChatGPT, conversely, declined slightly during the same timeframe.

Sensor Tower documented that both platforms continued expanding internationally. ChatGPT experienced a global monthly users rising 180%, while Gemini grew 125%. However, between August and December, Gemini’s growth rate doubled ChatGPT’s, aided by simpler access through Android devices and Nano Banana’s popularity.

Distribution advantages matter significantly

Accessibility plays a crucial role. Gemini now comes preinstalled on newer Android phones automatically. ChatGPT still demands a separate application download or web visit.

Artificial intelligence AI wasn’t Google’s sole victory in 2025. The company encountered legal challenges, including a determination that its advertising business operates as an illegal monopoly. Yet it escaped more severe consequences in other proceedings.

Legal battles conclude favorably

In September, a judge refused to compel Google to sell Chrome, despite identifying monopoly power in search. The decision also permitted Google to continue compensating distribution partners to preinstall Search, Chrome, and generative products. This preserved ongoing payments to Apple, estimated to exceed $20 billion annually.

Expansion beyond the core business

Outside courtrooms, Google progressed in transportation and devices. Waymo expanded robotaxi operations to cities, including Miami, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando. Freeway driving launched in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.

Google also introduced prototype smart glasses and a Samsung-manufactured virtual reality headset. Both operate on Android XR, a collaborative platform designed for immersive computing experiences.

The hardware push signals Google’s ambition to control the complete AI ecosystem from chips to consumer devices. This vertical integration strategy differentiates Google from competitors relying on third-party hardware.

Market position strengthens dramatically

After a year characterized by restored confidence, Google enters 2026 with the momentum that a few anticipated just months earlier. The company transformed from playing catch-up to setting the pace. Competitors now scramble to match Google’s integrated approach, combining cloud infrastructure, custom processors, leading AI models, and massive distribution advantages.

The AI race continues evolving rapidly. Google’s AI performance in 2025 demonstrates that early advantages in emerging technologies can evaporate quickly. Execution, integration, and distribution ultimately determine winners in platform competitions.

What’s your take? Has Google truly overtaken OpenAI in the AI race, or is this momentum temporary? How will this competitive shift impact innovation and product quality? Please share your views below.
